Week 5

Moving into week 5 as a vege-curious. So far, it’s been a pretty interesting experiment. I haven’t lost much weight (about 7-10lbs, depending on the day). I also haven’t lost a taste for meat (the smell, sight, etc still is very appealing). I don’t desire or crave it at all though, which is kind of a suprise. I figured after a month or so of not having it, I’d start foaming at the mouth or something similiar. Mary’s hangin in there pretty well too - I think being down 4lbs makes it totally worth it for her :)

After talking to Mary a bit tonight, we realized a few things have changed - we don’t eat out anywhere near as much (maybe 1 or 2 times a week) as it’s a much more substantial hastle to find a vege-friendly menu. We also don’t eat nearly as much in general - way less snacking, and smaller portions of food at meals. We’re not as hungry all the time as we used to be. If we could get away without eating 8 portions of cheese a day, we’d probably loose a lot more weight, but cheese seems to be in/on everything we like now :)

Coupled with going to the gym way more often than we used to (as much as 3-4 times per week now!), we both feel better in general. I’m tempted to re-introduce fish or chicken, and stay away from red meat for good…but I’m afraid that will run down a bad path again. That opens up alot of stuff that’s not quite so great for us - subway, fried chicken sandwiches, etc. Just fish kind of limits things to healthier, mercury filled meals.

I’m also tempted to just end the bet to eliminate the hastle, but stay mostly-meat free - maybe JUST fish and eggs/cheese. I kinda miss fish more than anything :)

Go go us!

So, we’re on week 4 of The Bet, and all is going well.kfc!

I was tempted to bring stugs a bucket of KFC last night, ’cause he couldn’t make it to Rajput for Vegetarian Buffet night, but I figured he’d just get upset.

The hardest part of this whole no-eating-meat thing, is restruants. Cooking at home is easy, and just as tasty - Morningstar Farms ‘chicken’ patty and nugget replacements taste just as good as the real thing. A bunch of restruants have no concept of being vege-friendly though (which is their perogative - not everybody serves kosher food either), which makes going out to eat a bit of a challenge. A few usually-safe choices are mexican and asian restruants. Beans, Rice and cheese will taste great forever :)

Windmill, Windmill for the land

So, this vegetarian thing isn’t all that bad. Tonight we had some Boca burgers, salad and taters for dinner. I’d never had Boca before, but it was pretty good; it will definitely become a staple of our new diet (we’re having it tomorrow night too, in jambalaya). I wonder if there’s a soy replacement for chicken available anywhere…

Apparently, I’ve also lost 5 pounds already, although I’ve got to imagine that it’s just a lack of drinking 8 gallons of soda, rather than any actual health benefit in just a short week. We’ll see.

In other news, I went with Chris to the Velux5Oceans race camp at Waterside yesterday to see the Oceans 60 boats docked there. Pictures forthcoming.

Saturday afternoon was spent with Matt & Alana and Chris at ATHFCMFFT. ATHF the movie was just about exactly like I had imagined it would be - an hour+ of ATHF the TV show (with cursing). I enjoyed it thoroughly! I still need to go see TMNT, if for nothing more than nostalgia purposes. I’ve been trying to find the ‘intermediary’ comics that bridge the gap between the last movie and the new one, but they don’t seem to be available anywhere.

Day 4, wheres the beef?

So, today is the fourth day of our friendly wager. My friend seems to be waivering in his commitment. Mary wants to keep a food log, and as i’ve already started here, I may as well keep going :)

Yesterday I had Peanut Butter + Banana sandwiches for lunch, and i’m having the same today. Yum-E.

For dinner we had Bertolli spinach and garlic pasta, and some bread. Tuesday night for dinner we had a 5-cheese pizza, cooked on Mary’s new pizza stone.

This is no where near as hard as I had feared - I haven’t really even felt the desire for meat since we started. The only serious impact I can see it having, is that it’s a serious pain in the neck to by prepared food, or eat at a few key restruants, unless you want nothing but salad and soup :(.

Thankfully here at work, there at lots of vegetarians, so the cafe has a pretty good selection of vege-friendly foods. Also, eggs. I love eggs :)

Food update

Day 2 has started ok, but first, the excitement of last night!

Last night, for dinner, we went to Kotobuki. I had fried Hijiki and Tofu. I had never heard of Hijiki before, but the waittress told me it was seaweed. Sounded ok, so I ordered the platter, which came with a spring roll and rice. This morning, I looked up Hijiki on wikipedia, and it turns out that it contains unsafe amounts of arsenic, and you aren’t supposed to eat it! Maybe being deep fried took care of any potential toxicicity - or it’s fake hijiki. I can’t imagine that stuff even being for sale in the US. My first day as a vegetarian, and I’m already having a brush with death!

This morning, I had an egg sandwich and some Hi-C Fruit Punch. Need moar sugar :(
