PC’s for Kids project

I gave a presentation at TWUUG this Thursday about my idea for rescueing and refurbishing PC’s that would otherwise just be recycled as waste, and giving those PC’s to empoverished/underserved children. I got a pretty good response, I think. Many people have since emailed me and let me know they are interested in helping out, and getting this idea off the ground.

My next steps are to get actual written confirmation from NPS that we can have the PC’s, and then to pursue incorporating as a non-profit charity, coming up with a name (guess that needs to happen first ), and setting up the infrastructure necessary to really get this to take off.

Thankfully, a lot of the up front work has been done, and DOCUMENTED by ‘Free Geek‘ in Portland, Oregon. The old saying that no ideas are new ideas has held true again, as they’ve gone ahead and done what I wanted to see happen here already. Hopefully, we’ll be able to take a page from their book, and be successful here in Hampton Roads.

Once we get a name, I plan on calling the City IT officials I know, as well as some surrounding large corporations, and see if I can’t get extra funding, etc for this plan. I’ll post updates here, as well as on whatever domain I register for the project!
