Little Box of Fun

Mary has started a new site to keep up with our burgeoning aquatic ecosystem - ‘www.littleboxoffun.com‘.  She’s got much more recent pictures, and bits about some of the different creatures we’re currently keeping in it.

It’s official.

I hate writing about the ‘new job’ until after I make it through the first day… just in case! I’m no longer an employee of Jefferson Science Associates / JLAB.  I turned in my 2 weeks back on 11/1, and my last day was Tuesday.  I was getting increasingly bored at JLAB, and it was becoming pretty evident that there would be no ‘upward movement’ for me there.  I started looking, and my new contract piqued my interest with the requirement for travel to Japan, Korea, Bahrain and others.

Starting Wed., I’ve become a “Sr. Network Engineer / Project manager” (my favorite title yet!) at Computer Sciences Corporation (which is WAY bigger than it sounds like it should be - 90k employees!).  I’ll be working as a contractor for the Navy, with 60-70% travel, internationally.  It sounds like it’ll be a blast.   So far it’s been quite dull - until my clearance comes in, I get to sit in a conference room and surf the net and try not to fall asleep and drool on myself.  Luckily, I finally got my CSC username and password, and can now access their incredibly online training tools, so I hope to use the next 1-2 weeks to study for my CCNP.  Hopefully I can knock out the first 2 tests before the end of the year. DOD contracting is definitely a totally different world than what I’ve been used to, even though basically my entire work history is government or contracting.  It seems like it won’t be too awful once I get over the initial 3-4 week hump and can actually start work.

Hopefully soon I’ll be adding a ‘Travel’ section to the blog :)

Aqua-scaping

The Tank

We finally got live rock and sand for our new Aquapod marine aquarium. After having a tank of blue-lit salt water for so long, it’s amazing how much more aesthetically pleasing some simple rocks can be!
In the past 24 hours, we discovered 3 hitch-hikers on the rocks/sand - a scallop, a serpentine sea star, and a krill. Hopefully there will be more life, now that the rocks aren’t being moved around and the water quality is improving (no more disturbed sand/rock fragments/etc).
After re-arranging the rocks the last time, I changed the angles on the pump outlet ports, so mix the top of the water more, and the sheen of protein that had accumulated cleared up in about an hour.
This morning, the tank was crystal clear, from top to bottom, and the rocks look really colorful (now that they’re not coated with settling sand!). Now we just have to wait for our diatomous algea bloom, and we’re in business!

Reasons to take good photos

You never know when someone is going to want to publish it, and you’ll be embarassed by how awful it really is :)

My picture of The Melting Pot’s table from our last anniversary was picked up by a food site (schmap.com) as their photo for The Melting Pot entry.

Why is waking up so difficult?

Every morning, I need to wake up. Every morning getting out of bed feels like the hardest task in the world.

It’s not that I’m tired exactly, although I can fall back to sleep immeadiately, it just seems like absolutely nothing in life could necessitate getting out of bed. Once I’m physical up though, I’m fine. I’m not sleepy, tired or anything. My moment of sleep inertia must be obscenely high - but this is something that’s been a problem from me since I was little.
