The Social Network

The last few days, I’ve spent cleaning out, updating, linking, fixing my accounts and profiles on countless social networking websites and services. I really wish the industry had come up with a federated account system - it’s a real pain in the neck to change your registered email address at dozens of different websites!

It’s also eye opening to see how many sites you’ve created accounts on, but haven’t used in months (or years - Orkut, for example).

So far, I’ve updated twitter, linkedIn, last.fm, del.icio.us, facebook, flickr, orkut, and bloglines.  I feel like I’m missing some…

Blogging with friends

It’s neat to see other people pick up the old digital pen and start writing again. This kind of thing really is social - the more your friends do it, the more you’re inspired to. To think, stugs had started his emojournal as a joke :) Now you’ve got me, Chris, and Nate at least writing semi-frequently.

Just remember to cleanup after yourself…

I love our city so!

Updates

So, now that I’ve gotten my first paycheck, it’s safe to say that I have a new job :)

February 1st was my first day as a (no kidding) Cyber Security Analyst. I’m working for Jefferson Science Associates at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (also know as JLAB). So far, it appears I’ll be focusing mostly on IDS management and security tool development (case tracking, etc). JLAB is definitely a different working environment than what I had grown used to at NPS. Everything here is much more laid back and relaxed feeling, but also much more isolated. I’ve gone a few days without even seeing another person, let alone talking to them. It’s quite a contrast from the nearly-open room environment I came from, where everyone could overhear everything going around them!

On the FIRST front, tonite/tomorrow is the contest at VCU in Richmond, VA. I’ll hopefully be attending tomorrow morning to watch the final round of regular competition, as well as the tournament at the end. It will be interesting to see how our robot does - Dr. Skena sounded positive, especially regarding our ramp configuration. We’ll see - I’ll be sure to post results as soon as I find out, as well as pictures of the event and the construction process.

Moving through the tubes…

So, in an effort to finally consolidate my online ‘presence’ (blog, websites, photos, RSS feeds, email, etc) into something under my total control (i.e., not dependent on friends, family, luck, job, etc., aside from my hosting company), I’ve started the arduous process of moving my email and web stuff into my new domain (uptill3.com).

In order to move email, I’ve got to figure out a mail server setup that works for me - the hosts I’m using today are running postfix, exim, and courier. I’m looking at migrating my stuff to Dovecot + Exim. It sounds straight forward enough, but I’d like to be able to run Hula in the future. And Hula doesn’t do Maildir, which is kind of important for non-Hula apps. :)

I’ll probably end up with Dovecot + Exim on uptill3.com and run Hula alone on maryandadam.com (so that Mary and I can share calendars, and she can have pretty web-mail access). So many domains, so little time!

I’m also looking at moving from Bloglines to Gregarius, because I love the idea of self-hosting my stuff, and not having to rely on Bloglines to be up and not charge or plaster me with ads (which they currently do not - it’s a great service, just not what I’m looking for in the end).

I’m currently running Up Till 3 in a VMWare Server 1.0 VM, along with a few of my other sites (such as maryandadam.com), so moving around in the future is as easy as stopping the VM, and SCP’ing the disk image to the new host!

Now that things with Alanne appear to be wrapping up, I should have plenty of extra time to research stuff for this blog, as well as write more - I’ve got tons of ideas for posts, I just haven’t had the time to write them all.

Getting back into the swing of things

So, it’s been a long time since I’ve published anything. I’m at a pretty turbulent point in life, and amongst other things, I was looking for a domain name I could be happy with for a long time (ever?) that wasn’t dependent on anyone else at all. I came up with ‘uptill3.com’, and figured I needed to go ahead and get something up here since I went through the trouble of registering it.

My goal is to write something here at least once a week, and to make it something meaningful - unlike previous attempts at this sort of thing, where the posts were copy/paste from IRC, or pictures, or anything like that. Lets see how good this works!
